The road is the path of recovery. The two consumer/ survivors are traveling on the path of recovery. PSR Core Principle 1: Recovery is the ultimate goal of Psychiatric Rehabilitation. Interventions must facilitate the process of recovery.
The path of recovery leads directly to the community (symbolized by the houses and buildings). Community is the heart of Psychosocial Rehabilitation (PSR). PSR Core Principle2: Psychiatric Rehabilitation practices help people re-establish normal roles in the community and their reintegration into community life. PSR Core Principle 13: Psychiatric Rehabilitation practices actively encourage and support the involvement of persons in normal community activities, such as school or work, throughout the rehabilitation process.
The path to recovery, as it approaches the community, divides into several different paths, all originating from the original path of recovery. This symbolizes the freedom and opportunity for the consumer/survivor to choose his/her own unique recovery path back into the community. PSR Core Principle 6: People receiving services have the right to direct their own affairs, including those that are related to their psychiatric disability. PSR Core Principle 12: All services are to be designed to address the unique needs of each individual, consistent with the individual's cultural values and norms.
The two trees, one beside the two consumer/survivors on the path of recovery and the other in the community, represent PSR services and personal support networks. Both of these are available and are nurtured during recovery and continue within the community. PSR Core Principle 3: Psychiatric Rehabilitation practices facilitate the development of personal support networks. PSR Core Principle 11: Psychiatric Rehabilitation services are to be coordinated, accessible, and available as long as needed.
The two consumer/survivors depicted are a white female and a black male representing a diverse cultural and ethnic mix. PSR Core Principle 9: Culture and/or ethnicity play an important role in recovery. They are a source of strength and enrichment for the person and the services. PSR Core Principle 8: Psychiatric Rehabilitation Practitioners make conscious and consistent efforts to eliminate labeling and discrimination, particularly discrimination based upon a disabling condition.
The two consumer/survivors are physical walking on the path of recovery, representing their commitment and involvement in the recovery process. PSR Core Principle 14: The involvement and partnership of persons receiving services and family members is an essential ingredient of the process of rehabilitation and recovery. The two consumer/survivors are walking down the path of recovery together, side-by-side, shoulder-to-shoulder, symbolizing the support consumer/survivors give each other (peer support).
The sun is a symbol of hope, crucial to Psychiatric Rehabilitation. It is off to the side because there is a greater force to hope than just services and human effort.
